The cyclo-cross season continued last weekend with the 2nd race of the season, round 1 of the East Kent CX League down in Sandwich (Yes - the place where the Sandwich came from). Six of us made the trek down there and it turned out to be well worth it.
EKCX always put on amazing events and great courses. In contrast to last week the Sandwich course is pretty much dead flat, but it had a great flow to it with combinations of fast straights, tight turns, little humps through a few trees, hurldes and a sand pit!
First up for the team were the V50s with Stuart Evans and Paul James representing the Wheelers in a big field. It was a return to form for both riders with Stuart finishing 6th and Paul 16th.
The Youth U16s were next with Oscar Nisbett and Oliver Haysom. Both lads got flying starts and had really strong rides. Oscar took the win, attacking the lead group of 3 on the penultimate turn and powering to victory. Oliver rode probably his best race so far to take 6th place in the U16 boys category, a great result.
In the V40s I was the only Wheeler this week. The start was mental as always with some close racing. It soon settled down and after a few laps split into little groups. I managed to get away from a group fighting for 3rd place and ended up taking 3rd in the end which I was very pleased with.
The final race was the senior mens featuring Henry James. Unfortunately we couldn't hang around to watch it, but it sounds like he had a solid race, finishing 6th in a very strong field.
Next race is our one at Pippingford Park, round 2 of the London League, should be awesome!
